ARCH 431 – Robotics (UG)


This course is a hands-on exploration of robotic fabrication techniques. The goal of the course is to understand the capabilities and constraints of building with industrial robots. This will be accomplished by researching previous built work and fabricating our own projects. The projects will start simple and build in complexity throughout the semester. They’ll include analyzing robot motion with long exposure photography, creating light paintings, stacking a parametrically generated scale brick wall, and exploring the possibilities of robotic clay extrusion. We’ll then investigate using secondary and tertiary processes on our robotically fabricated projects. For example, we’ll make plaster molds of the cut foam parts. The molds will be used for slip casting to create ceramic vessels. We’ll learn to program the robots using Rhino, Grasshopper and Kuka|prc, a plug-in used for procedural robot control. No prior experience with Grasshopper or programming is necessary; however, you should be capable of modeling in Rhino
