Urban planning students recognized for advising new development plans for northern Macomb's suburban future

Student work from the winter 2011 UP505 Fundamentals of Planning Practice course was featured in the April 24 issue of The Macomb Daily newspaper.

The Master of Urban Planning (M.U.P.) students, including Jacob Anderson, Erin Guido, Payton Heins, Cameron Hollingshead and Brent Schleck, offered advice to Macomb County officials on the future of the country's suburban landscapes within the coming decades.

As the demographics of Macomb County are changing – with more senior citizens, more "empty nester" homes, and fewer households with children – the future of the north Macomb townships requires a developmental re-envisioning, especially considering the rapid rate of regional changes from 1995-2005 alone.

Using Shelby Township as a model, the students developed a community plan with smaller homes – closer to the street, closer together, without garages out front – that would appeal to a new generation of home buyers in Macomb as well as Chesterfield and Washington townships.

Assistant Professor Suzanne Lanyi Charles, Lecturer Julie Steiff, Lecturer Megan Masson-Minock and GSI Paul Coseo were instructors for the UP505 course.
