Professor Robert Fishman to speak at the opening of new National Museum of American Jewish History on Nov. 11

Architecture and urban planning professor Robert Fishman will speak at the symposium, “Jews and the American City,” sponsored by the Feinstein Center for American Jewish History, at Temple University, to mark the opening of the new National Museum of American Jewish History (Polshek Partnership Architects) on Independence Mall in Philadelphia.

The November 11, 2010, all-day conference will explore the relationship between Jews and American urbanism, and will explore what role Jews and Jewish ideals have played in the redevelopment of urban space, especially over the last three decades.

Fishman – among other practitioners in and scholars of the fields of urban development, urban planning, architecture and urban politics – will consider how we can understand American cityscapes in light of Jews’ investment in the creation, destruction and re-creation of urban spaces and ideals.

Other speakers at the event will include: Lizabeth Cohen, Deborah Dash Moore, Paul Levy, Max Page, Wendell Pritchett, Inga Saffron and Tom Sugrue.
