Professor Chris Leinberger discusses the built environment's impact on greenhouse gas emissions, walkable urban space in Memphis

Professor of Practice in Urban and Regional Planning Chris Leinberger discussed the effect of built environment on greenhouse gas emissions in an article published in Memphis Daily News on March 28, 2011. In the article, Leinberger emphasized the possibility of a “walkable urban” through a more complex transportation system that would include rail transit and bike lanes.

“Think of transportation as the rudder on a ship,” Leinberger said. “It dictates where the rest of the built environment goes. It dictates where the rest of the built economy goes.”

According to Leinberger, the demand for the walkable urban can be fulfilled in cities like Memphis through rail transit and a selection of regionally significant walkable urban places.
