U.S. News lists U-M among country’s top four public universities

The University of Michigan remains among the nation’s best public universities according to the 2019 U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges rankings released Monday.

Coming in at No. 4 among public universities, U-M follows the University of California-Los Angeles, University of California-Berkeley and the University of Virginia.

On the overall list, U-M moved up one spot from last year to No. 27.

While university officials are pleased that U-M is continually recognized as a leader in higher education, they note what matters most is focusing on the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and societal impact.

UM-Dearborn was ranked No. 38 (tied with six other schools) on the list of best regional universities in the Midwest. On a list of public schools in the Midwest, it moved up one spot to No. 5, tied with Eastern Illinois University and University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

U.S. News also annually ranks undergraduate business and engineering programs.

The Stephen M. Ross School of Business undergraduate program ranked No. 4 nationally, down one spot from last year. Six specialties within Ross ranked in the top four of their specific disciplines: accounting (fourth), entrepreneurship (fourth), finance (fourth), management (first), marketing (first) and production/operations management (second).

The College of Engineering maintained its No. 6 position on the overall list of undergraduate engineering programs. Four specialties also ranked in the top five for their specific disciplines: aerospace (fourth), industrial (second), materials (second) and mechanical (fifth).

Additional rankings

The magazine also published several other lists including historically black colleges and universities and student debt load at graduation.

Other lists on which U-M appeared included: strong commitment to undergraduate teaching (No. 19), best high school counselor top college picks (No. 23), best value school (No. 47) and most innovative schools (No. 12).

U-M ranked No. 9 on the list that ranked the best colleges for veterans.
