Assistant Professor Steven Mankouche’s “Digital Steam Bending” winner of a 2010 R+D Award is featured on Architect Magazine’s Projects page.

Referring to historical precedents in the process of bending wood using steam, the project uses parametric modeling coupled with CNC technology to push the material to its limits, using a series of failure points as the basis for generating form. “Digital Steam Bending” began with a Research Through Making grant in 2010 with faculty members Josh Bard and Tsz Yan Ng, and structural engineering consultant, Associate Professor Peter Von Buelow, and generated the design of two structural systems, one based on Michael Thonet’s iconic No. 14 bistro chair, and another based on a wishbone pattern found in the canoe construction techniques of the Great Lakes region.
