Taubman College Students, faculty & alumni recognized and participate in UM MLK Symposium
The keynote address for the 26th annual MLK Symposium at Hill Auditorium was delivered by National Public Radio reporter Michele Norris on January 16, 2012 at Hill Auditorium. President Mary Sue Coleman recognized two Taubman alumni who contributed to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial: Edward Jackson (D.Arch.’93, President ArchD Consulting Ltd), executive architect for the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Foundation, and James Chaffers (FAIA, M.Arch.’69, D.Arch.’71) professor emeritus of architecture and a senior design juror for the project. President Coleman also recognized Jon Lockard, Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, who served as artistic consultant.
The keynote address is one of many events held on campus for the month-long MLK symposium. Every year, faculty, students, staff, academic units, departments, and community members develop programs and initiatives to continue and remember the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition to events that focus on historical authenticity and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s, programs highlight historical and contemporary issues of race, class, social justice, diversity, and societal change.
Taubman College master of urban planning students, Diana Flora, Isaac Gilman, Julie Schneider and Elias Schewel were honored with nominations by the faculty of the urban and regional and planning program and recognized at the MLK Spirit dinner on North Campus. The dinner recognized students from the four North Campus schools and colleges who best exemplify the leadership and extraordinary vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
As a follow-up to “Framing a Cultural Ideal,” held Oct. 28, 2011, where the Taubman College first honored Chaffers, Jackson and Lockard for their work, Associate Dean Milton S.F. Curry’s thoughts on the opening of the MLK Memorial was published as Architect Magazine’s way of commemorating MLK Day.
