Taubman College Faculty and Alumnus Aid University in New Sustainability Goals
President Mary Sue Coleman announced new university sustainability goals on September 27, 2011. The goals derive from the Campus Sustainability Integrated Assessment (CSIA) which was led by a partnership between the Graham Sustainability Institute and the Office of Campus Sustainability. The goals reflect the work of more than 500 students, faculty and staff, representing 101 units and 27 academic programs. Among those involved, Associate Professor Larissa Larsen and Emeritus Professor Robert Marans both guided teams involved in the sustainability efforts. Larsen lead a team that looked at food, interested in "improving the quality of food, improving the connections to local producers, and thinking about issues of sustainability and waste reduction," Larsen says. Taubman College master of urban planning program alumnus, Kevin Burns McCoy, was also involved with the food team. Marens, culture team leader, conducted informal interviews with the university community and "designed a program for collecting cultural indicators that will periodically measure peoples' feelings, peoples' levels of awareness and knowledge about sustainability, and their behaviors."
