Students architectural design studio and structural seminar fabric structures on display at Grass Lake Sanctuary

Taubman College fabric structures from a winter architectural design studio and structural seminar, entitled “TAUT,” are on display at Grass Lake Sanctuary now through the end of summer. TAUT was an integrated design studio and structural seminar course taught at Taubman College. The course exposed architecture graduate students to the design history and techniques of constructing tensile fabric structures. As part of the course, students researched, designed, fabricated, and installed individual fabric structures on the grounds of the sanctuary, located at 18580 Grass Lake Road in Manchester, Mich. Each installation addresses the landscape and therapeutic program of the GLS through the construction of an inhabitable structure for one or two people. Visitors are encouraged to touch them, view the landscape through them, and take shelter in their delicate, taut walls. The course was taught by faculty members Harry Giles and Anca Trandafirescu.
