Newell Invited to Exhibit Solo Show, Midnight, at University of Sydney

Catie Newell, associate professor and director of the Master of Science in Digital and Material Technologies, is opening a solo exhibition at the Tin Sheds Gallery at the University of Sydney called Midnight. “Midnight captures an instant in Detroit when darkness is displaced and light mis-registers the urban landscape.” It is an exhibition in which Newell has created a floating installation piece made from materials that are selected from the wires that construct the nighttime infrastructure of Detroit, and photographs from her series called Nightly, which “records the presence of another city—a city disappearing into a darkness that removes the city’s daytime walls, alters its spaces, and haunts.”

In addition to her exhibition and organizing an intensive workshop, Newell has also been invited by the University of Sydney to present a public lecture on September 20 called Before Midnight where she will discuss her darkness research and installation work.

Newell is the founding principal of the art and architecture practice *Alibi Studio. Her Midnight exhibition will be open to the public on Thursday, September 28 – Friday November 10, 2017.
