Architecture Programs

A dynamic Educational environment

Taubman College is committed to the idea that architectural education can build upon a plurality of foundations, diverse ideas, experiences, histories, methodologies, and technical conceptual capacities. Architecture is a cultural product that negotiates a complex multitude of voices and ideas in various social, political, and aesthetic concerns.

Through the intellectual diversity of our internationally recognized faculty and the experimental spirit within our studios, we seek to model that plurality at a time when architecture is increasingly confronted by changing social, technological, and environmental contexts.

PREPARE TO LEAD

We prepare students for their futures by cultivating a dynamic educational environment where assumptions are challenged, ideas are debated, and emergent design methods are forged.

Our graduates enter their careers with expertise in the most innovative global design practices, an understanding of architecture’s histories and potential futures, and an aptitude to think actively in the world that makes them agents of progress for a better, more just, and more beautiful built environment.

/ Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are no longer required nor considered for admission to all graduate programs at Taubman College.

Programs Offered

The undergraduate program culminates in a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) and the graduate program culminates in a Master of Architecture degree (M.Arch). In addition, the college also offers a Ph.D. in Architecture, a Master of Urban Design (M.U.D.), and a Master of Science in Architecture (M.S.). Undergraduate students may apply directly as freshmen or transfer in as junior-level students.

The graduate program is open to students who have already earned undergraduate degrees in architecture (2-year M.Arch.), as well as those who received undergraduate degrees from other disciplines (3-year M.Arch.). Dual degrees and graduate certificates are also available.

/ Bachelor of Science in Architecture

The Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree prepares students for future work in a myriad of areas. After graduating, some students choose to pursue graduate studies in a professional Master of Architecture program in order to prepare for architectural licensure.

Some pursue graduate study in related fields, including landscape architecture, engineering, art, construction, urban planning, urban design, or historic preservation, while others pursue graduate degrees in business or law, applying their design knowledge to these fields.

Others find opportunities with architecture firms or in other related design occupations or use their degree as a springboard for creative work in unrelated fields.

/ Master of Architecture

Taubman College’s Master of Architecture is a studio-intensive degree that takes a critical view of design, theory, and production.

Professional coursework and electives in topical areas supplement the design education model. The combination of professional coursework and coursework in representation, fabrication, history, and theory prepares students to engage in a research-based thesis design project as their final studio.

The program offers a wide array of electives in history/theory, criticism, structures, environmental and construction technology, urbanism, sustainable design, computation, and digital fabrication.

/ Master of Science in Architecture Design and Research

The Master of Science in Architecture Design and Research (M.S.) is an advanced, post-professional degree, featuring a concentration in Digital and Material Technologies. The degree is offered by Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning along with the Rackham Graduate School.

/ Master of Urban Design

The Master of Urban Design (M.U.D.) is a one-year-and-a-half post-professional degree open to students with professional degrees in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban and regional planning. The degree addresses a diverse range of urban design thought and experimentation informing the work in selected national and international settings.

/ Ph.D. in Architecture

The Ph.D. in Architecture invites applicants who wish to investigate architecture and the built environment in focused projects that unfold over a span of years. Students embarking on a doctorate conduct original research that yields new insights into past, current, and future developments of architecture and building practices. Doctoral Studies promote independent critical thinkers and research specialists across a range of fields within the increasingly broad fields of architecture and the built environment.

/ Dual Degrees

Dual degree programs enable students to earn two degrees in considerably less time than if each degree were earned separately.

Formal Dual Degree Programs

Six formally structured dual degree programs enable students interested in architecture:

/ Accreditation

The M.Arch. degree is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).

/ Pathways Program

The Taubman College Pathways program seeks to create avenues to diversify the Taubman College community and the fields of architecture and urban planning. Geared toward those exploring graduate education, the program provides an opportunity for career exploration and learning more about Taubman College’s academic offerings in an intimate setting.

/ Additional Learning Opportunities

Study Abroad

In addition, Taubman College students have opportunities to study abroad. International travel courses are an essential part of the college’s course offerings, granting students the prospect of visiting other countries while gaining access to facilities, groups, and individuals that might otherwise be closed to them.
