ACSA Conference: Haar Co-chairs, Faculty Participate

Architecture Chair Sharon Haar co-chaired the Annual Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Conference on March 17-19, 2016 at the University of Washington in Seattle. Entitled “Shaping New Knowledges,” the conference explored the productive tension between research and practice in discovering new information within the field of architecture.

Taubman College faculty were thoroughly engaged in the conference as both moderators and presenters. Sharon Haar moderated an open project session. Mireille Roddier and Anca Trandafirescu moderated a double session on urban interventions, including a paper by Ana Morcillo Pallares on spatial strategies in Detroit. Together, Anca Trandafirescu and Glenn Wilcox presented “Flying Carpet” in a project session about shaping space. James Michael Tate presented “Capriccio” in a project session on urbanism, history, and theory, as well as a paper on labor in architecture, titled “CAMPO VACCINO: A Drawing Exercise Not Found in the Ching Book.”  Kathy Velikov presented a paper, “Topologies of Exclusion,” in a paper session on architecture and landscape. In addition, Velikov collaborated with Geoffrey Thün on a paper from their “Protean Prototypes” research and also collaborated with Andreas Sevtsuk from Harvard University in a special focus session on smart environments. Tsz Yan Ng presented a paper, “Concrete Labor,” on labor and architecture. Anya Sirota moderated a paper session on labor and presented her project, “Electroform(alism),” which received a faculty design award.
